About MIL-STD-810

This is an equipment testing standard by the United States Department of Defense (DoD). It describes detailed testing procedures designed to determine how equipment holds up under a variety of conditions—such as temperature, impact, vibration and humidity—the equipment may encounter while being used, transported and stored.

While the standard is extensively used for testing rugged computing equipment, it was not specifically designed for these purposes. As a result, some tests are ambiguous when applied to computing equipment.

MIL-STD-810 testing methods

With MIL-STD-810, which many consider the rugged standard, it’s best to look at it as a comprehensive set of environmental standards, rather than a single specification. Explore these links to learn more about our approach to individual testing methods.

MIL-STD-810 compliance

Here are questions to ask a vendor to validate their MIL-STD-810 compliance test methods:

  • Which MIL-STD-810 testing methods were used?
  • What were the parameters?
  • Was testing done by an independent facility?
  • Has this computer passed field verification trials or been successfully proven on a mission?
  • Can I see the testing report?

The answers will help you confirm that the necessary testing was completed or if a product was merely designed to be tested, a telltale sign of potential problems.
